Strong magnetic fields have been detected in the Milky Way’s central black hole

“By fixing polarised light from hot glowing gas near black holes, we directly determine the structure and strength of the magnetic fields that permeate the flow of gas and matter. But imaging black holes in polarised light is not as easy as putting on polarised sunglasses, and this is especially true for the Sagittarius A* object, which changes incredibly fast,” explained the project participants.
